Queue callbacks: letting people hang up without losing their place

The caller keeps their position in the queue and gets rung back. Cheap to switch on, and it changes the shape of a bad morning.

How it works

When the wait is long, the system offers to call the customer back instead of holding. They hang up. Their place in the queue is kept, and when it comes round the system rings them and connects them to the next agent.

From the desk's point of view nothing changes — the same calls arrive in the same order.

Why it is worth it

Abandoned calls are the ones that hurt: the customer waited, gave up, and is now annoyed and still unserved. A callback converts that into a served call at no extra staffing cost.

The two ways to get it wrong

Promising a callback and not making it is worse than making them hold, because now you have broken a specific promise rather than merely been slow.

And ringing back from a different number than the one they called means half of them will not answer. Ring back from the number they know.
